2008
My very first band was formed (impromptu) when I was in secondary 4.
Back then I still did not know how to play drums so the whole band idea thing was just ridiculously fun :D
CHMA (Catholic High Music Awards) came in around july/august (I cant remember) and my 'band' thought, hey we must take part !!
And so I forced my way to learning drums through google and youtube all, and I got myself a pair of drumsticks and practised the songs by playing on my pillows at home HAHAHA. It's really funny now that I come to think of it.
Anyway, my band was named 'Victor and the viscious vipers' because the lead singer's name is victor and we are so called the vipers haha.
And amazingly, we managed to play our songs very well. Our audition song was "you only live once" by the strokes. A very indie song. And apparently the teacher liked our song hehehe.
So we got into finals, and we decided to choose a old school rock to play.... 'back in black' by ACDC.
And I daresay my band played very very well and we literally brought the crowd forward to the stage :)
Anyway, we are supposed to 'win' because during rehearsals it was pretty obvious my band played the best. But we did not :(
After the awards, a lot of students went to ask the teacher about the reasons that my band did not win. And the teacher (a music teacher from my school) said that she also agreed that my band ought to win, but the other two judges felt that my band is too 'high' and made the audience went 'crazy' and the other winning band had more 'ups and downs'.*
*Here's the funny part! Apparently, the winning band has its 'ups and downs', we called it dynamite, because they made mistakes during the song :'D AND ALMOST EVERYBODY COULD TELL. Even my parents who came to watch said that winning band sucked why would they win haha.
BUT it's okay! I felt accomplished then, because it was my first ever performance on stage with a rock band. And it was utterly fun.
2008 holidays
Well, O levels was over and so I went on my journey to seek different genre of bands to play with :)
I found this girl, her name is Dulcie, which happened to be a friend of my friend's friend. HAHA.
She sings, and sings very well. And the good thing was, we shared a common liking for old school rock, such as kiss, aerosmith, guns n roses, motley crue etc. And so we deciced to form a band (I forgot the name)
We played for about a month or two and then we performed in a gig at the Arthouse :)
It was a fun experience!
2009
I came to know these few guys who are my CJ's classmates and they also play instruments so I decided to start a band with them. (By the way we went to watch a local gig by some metal genre band and we had so much fun there :D.)
And so the band ( I named it 'another pufferfish escaped') had a goal, and that was to perform a gig in a local studio at jalan besar area. We practised over the weekends and our genre was more of heavy metal / rock. We played stuffs like velvet revolver, funeral for a friend, bon jovi etc.
Our mutual JC friends came to support during the gig. It was a pay to play gig by the way :/ It means that we had to help the studio sell a certain amount of tickets haha. (Very smart right the studio, a good way to earn money haha. )
2010
CJC has a annual rock band challenge 'Rockafella' and of course I did form a band with my school mates to take part!
My band 'no puppets no strings' played a medley up of 'time is running out' by muse and 'face down' by red jumpsuit apparatus and one more song I cant remember now :P
Anyway we got second in place :)
*sorry didn't have access to full band photo :(
2010 holidays
Anyway, after I graduated from CJ, a few of us from different participated bands were called back to form a guest band to perform for the 2011 'rockafella'. Pris (the lead singer) named us the 'all stars band' :D We played 'this love' by maroon 5 and 'sweet child o mine' by guns n roses. :)
2010 holidays to 2011
And so after A levels I found another band online that played stuffs like Meg and Dia, paramore, Coldplay etc. We named our band - 'blame the eve'.
The group of people are really amazing and as our age gap was pretty small, it was fun during jamming sessions. After many practices, we also performed (and its my bandmates' ever first performance on stage so they were very excited) at scape, cineleisure orchard. I cant really remember the 5 songs we played but there's meg and dia songs and one cold play's 'the scientist'. Anyway it was a fun experience even though there wasn't much crowd haha. I had to quit the band because I was going to serve NS and I want to take this opportunity to say sorry to you guys! I'm really sorry for being the jerk who just avoided y'all, it was because I knew I wouldn't have time to jam with the band anymore so I must leave (I know you guys told me that it's okay we can still jam as a band but I kind of guessed I will cause the band to jam less frequently so I decided to quit) So, blame the eve, Im really sorry ! If I can turn back to time, I would have just stayed with you guys.
Here's the pic of us performing at scape!
NS 2011 to 2012
Despite the very limited time I have for myself over the weekends, I found a band online :PIt was the first band I had that the age gap among the members was pretty great. I was the youngest and still serving NS, while the rest had ORD and was working and 3 of them even went back for reservist (1 or 2 cycles)
We focus a lot on guns n roses, and played a lot of oldies songs as well.
We never get to perform but it's okay, everybody had something to take and learn from all the jamming sessions :)
Current
To cut the story short, im currently playing with two bands.
1. This band has way too many names, so I will just stick to one of the old ones, 'catfish'
We cover mostly indie songs, from artist like arctic monkeys (my favourite), the strokes, Bombay bicycle club, two doors cinema club, muse, nightmare of you etc.
We still have not performed but im determined that one day we will shine :)
2. This band, too, has not decided a name yet but we are working on it. So far we have 'the attic'
Anyway originally we are a 'paramore' cover band, since Sabryna (the singer) likes paramore songs. We did cover quite a few of paramore songs with three other dudes but we quit after a month or so because sabryna and I wanted to try something different. So the two of us formed a acoustic band (so I can play my cajon) with anther guitarist, mikail, and we are planning to do performances in local pubs in the future.
